Christoph Niemann is an award winning illustrator who’s work has appeared in, and on the cover of, a variety of publications including The New Yorker, Newsweek, Wired, The New York Times Magazine and American Illustration. He’s also behind a semi-regular column on the New York Times’ site entitled “Abstract City” where he uses his skills to visually tell snippets of big city stories in visual form.

In his most recent post he’s taken design elements most commonly seen in in online mapping tools like Google Maps and twisted them to convey a short ’story’ or situation.

I’ve embedded “Omelet” below – click through to see all of his images over on the New York Times site. Some are clear and obvious, others a little more subtle (“Chewing Gum” is a personal favorite) – either way they’re a fun but compelling example of how very basic visuals can be used to tell a story effectively.
